In An Intimate Voice from Afar: A Brief History of New York's Chinese-Language Wireless Radio, Radio Studies scholar Casey Man Kong Lum called Chinese American immigrant radio “a bond to [Chinese Americans’] past and a gateway to their diasporic future.”¹
中国广播网 The Chinese Radio Network (CRN) — home to WGBB-AM 1240 — is the first and longest-standing Mandarin-language station in New York City. Its history is layered: diaspora and home-making, information systems for immigrant communities, local and global networks, evolving identity and politics, lived experiences, and the question of what is worth remembering. This exhibit will explore those themes, as well as a brief national history of Chinese radio, the formation of the CRN, the life history of CRN's director, Josephine Chain Hui, and my own personal connection to this historic institution.
